Packers vs Raiders  : The quarterbacks have not been the problem in Green Bay or Oakland. But can the rest of these rosters catch up? That’s the main question hanging over Thursday’s Raiders vs. Packers matchup. The Raiders and the Packers will get a chance to test drive some much-needed offseason acquisitions when they clash in Canada.

Everyone knows that Aaron Rodgers is an elite talent, but Raiders quarterback Derek Carr doesn’t always get the credit he deserves. Only a few points actually separate the passer ratings of the two QBs. Both players have enough talents to get results from their teams, but other aspects of each squad are going to have to improve from last season if they are going to post better marks this time around. For the Packers, special teams and tight end are two areas that need improvement. Last season, Green Bay’s special teams ranked a dismal 28th in DVOA. Jimmy Graham is supposed to shore up the Packers’ tight-end situation, but people covering the team think that rookie Jace Sternberger might make for a better longterm solution.

The biggest weakness for the Pack right now is inside linebacker, and the position battle between Ty Summers and Curtis Bolton is a key fight to watch. For the Raiders, the running game has to improve. The aging tandem of Doug Martin and Marshawn Lynch weren’t enough to get it done last season, and first-round running back Josh Jacobs could be a game changer for the team’s rushing prospects. The Raiders pass rush will also need to improve dramatically. Oakland only managed 13 sacks total last season, and number four overall pick Clelin Ferrell will have to be a difference maker if the defense is going to succeed. This Week 3 matchup should be the first time that we get to see a lot of these units in a shape similar to what we’ll see throughout the regular season.

In their last preseason meeting on Aug. 24, 2018 in Oakland, the Raiders won 13-6, with the Packers’ only points coming from two field goals by Mason Crosby.According to, the regular-season series started in 1972, with the Raiders winning each of the first five matchups. The Packers earned their first victory over the Raiders in 1990, and haven’t lost since — outscoring the Raiders 240-90.The Green Bay Packers last met the Oakland Raiders in the regular season on Dec. 20, 2015 at Oakland Coliseum. The Packers won 30-20.The Green Bay Packers close the presason at Lambeau Field on Thursday, Aug. 29, hosting the Kansas City Chiefs.

White has been SportsLine’s top pro football analyst for two-plus seasons. Over that span, the CBS Sports NFL editor and nationally-recognized NFL Draft expert has gone 214-164 on against the spread picks, returning over $3,200 to $100 bettors. The stats guru, whose picks are coveted by fans everywhere, has cashed huge in the world’s most prestigious handicapping tournament, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, twice in the past four years. He’s also a Packers expert, hitting on 24 of his last 28 NFL against the spread picks involving Green Bay. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, White has analyzed the rosters and made his pick for Raiders vs. Packers. You can only see it at SportsLine.White knows that Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not played this preseason, in which Green Bay is 1-1 straight-up, 1-1 against the spread, and averaging 27 points per game. The Packers beat visiting Houston in Week 1 and lost in Baltimore last week. Rodgers has said he would like to play Thursday, but only if first-year coach Matt LaFleur “will let him.” The quarterback said he’s “excited” to play in Canada and expects plenty of Packers fans.

One reason LaFleur might allow it is so Rodgers can take live snaps against real competition before the regular season to learn Green Bay’s new offense in game conditions. One reason LaFleur might not is that Rodgers’ back stiffened up before the Ravens game, which led him to being scratched.

But just because the Packers could have home field advantage doesn’t mean Green Bay will cover the Raiders vs. Packers spread.
White also knows Oakland is one of a handful of teams that are unbeaten in the preseason even though starting quarterback Derek Carr played only briefly in one game, last week’s 33-26 victory at Arizona. Moreover, coach Jon Gruden is 5-1 in the preseason with the Raiders.Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman are battling for the backup job to Carr, and both were sharp in the win over the Cardinals. Glennon was 11-for-14 for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Peterman went 8-for-8 for 41 yards. Oakland beat the Packers last preseason, 13-6, covering a five-point home spread in Week 3. Carr led a scoring drive in his only possession, and Rodgers didn’t play.We can tell you White is leaning under, but his most confident pick is against the spread. He says a critical x-factor makes one side of the spread a must-back. He’s only sharing what it is, and which team to back, at SportsLine.
